She wondered how far she had gone. She had been told not to go too far, although she was not sure exactly what far was, but had forgotten that what she started riding.
What he said about the neighborhood being too fancy for him made Amber wonder why she was there. She did not think that she could possibly be good enough to live in a fancy neighborhood. The neighborhood that she had lived in before had been almost as fancy, but she had to clean the entire house daily and put up with a lot of torture to earn her keep there. That was certainly not the case here.
"You will be able to get back, won't you?" she asked. She felt like she had already asked him something similar, but she was not sure. Still, she cared about, and was worried about, Jake. She was not sure why, since she just met him, but she was.
He kept moving his eyes from the phone in his eyes to the street, concentrating as much as his hungover brain could. He looked up briefly when she spoke, shrugging. ”Hah. I got myself from Mississippi to California without too much effort. I think I can get from... wherever this is, to back home. No worries.” he smiled happily. Of course, that roadtrip wasn't exactly a child-friendly tale, but he could honestly think of little in his life that was, and he was rapidly getting tired of trying to think of something. Shit, she was gonna grow up sooner or later, too. One could only bullshit kids for so long.
Looking back down at his phone, he realised something else. ”Hey, don't you have a phone? I thought most toddlers had phones nowadays. I mean, I didn't have one until I got one for myself, but on the other hand, I'm 19 and I still don't know how these things work, so...” he said, pausing to think for a second. ”You know, I just got this new one. I don't get it at all, but it has a map, so I'm sticking by it. I still have the older one on me, if you want it? It doesn't have any grand features or anything, but if you're planning on getting lost again, which I recommend, cause its fun, then maybe you should have a way to get in contact with someone who can help you back home.” the minute he said that, he realised how much shit he would have to delete off of that phone before giving it to her. But whatever, he'd ask her to look away until he was done, or something. Better she had a way to call her parents or whatever when this happened, than risking the next person who found her was a shithole.

(Sorry it took me so long to respond to this. I got impatient and did not check for a while.)
“Wow,” she said, in awe. “You’ve been a lot of places.” The extent of traveling done in her family was her mother and brother going to school and work, and occasionally on day trips. The extent of traveling that she ever got to do was wonder around the neighborhood with Jackson.
Mr. Hallier had asked her that same question the day before, and he had seemed surprised when she had responded by shaking her head no. Now, someone else was asking her that same question. She shook her head. She shrugged when he said that he thought most toddlers had phones. Jackson had had one for years, but she did not know about most kids. She had always believed that she wasn’t as worthy as most kids, and her brother was more worthy than most.
Amber was surprised when he offered her his old phone. “You-you don’t have to do that,” she told him. “Your-your already helping me.” The Hillier’s had given her new things a lot in the couple of days that she had lived with them, including her own room, bed, wardrobe of fairly well fitting girl clothes, and her own bicycle. She did not believe that she deserved any of it, and now someone else was trying to give her something. She felt like the world had gone nuts and forgotten that she was the useless piece of shit and a pathetic excuse for a human being that she had been taught that she was.
