In 1905, a government facility located on an island exploded due to a test subject gaining the ability to cause explosions. Their tests related with medical research had altered the genes of numerous people, which created monsters and gifted. Some got strange deformations, such as extra arms, eyes and even noses. Others were turned into creatures of the unknown, like vampires, werewolves and various other creatures that would bring horror to anyone. They called the people who'd been transformed into creatures monsters. The remainder of test subjects retained their human appearance, but gained a variety of powers (or gifts) that would allowed them to cause mass destruction. They called these people gifted for their mystical powers. After the explosion, the survivors fled the island and infiltrated the rest of the world, making their presence known. People were terrified, and thus the government worked tirelessly to remedy the situation they created, or at least for the most part. Soon after the release of both gifted and monsters, gods and demigods began revealing themselves, which only made the situation worst. For three years the government worked, and by 1908 they had created the city known as Paradise on the island that formally held the lab. During those years, they made a train that rain beneath the water as well as a barrier that disabled the powers of gifted and monsters whilst they were being transported. These disabling barriers were placed around the two train stations, making it impossible to escape the island. Once all the pieces were set, the government set out and began rounding up their experiments along with anyone else who appeared to have powers. Naturally, they couldn't find them, thus they formed a division of professionals to hunt down whoever remained outside of Paradise. They were called the Mystical Creatures Retrieval Agents (MCRA), but most people just called them monster hunters. People with abilities were taken to Paradise in the hundreds, and more continued to flood in every single day. The government may have named the city Paradise, but the residence knew one thing. It was really just a glorified prison that they were forced to live in. |
